What is Pottery?
There are three different types of pottery within the world, which consist of Earthenware, Kaolin, and Stoneware. Kaolin and stoneware make porcelain and Earthenware makes ceramics. The type that most Pueblos use is earthenware. Within Native communities pottery was initially intended for storage such as for food and water, to cook, and as well for ceremonial uses. Usually, Pueblo Potters located here in Northern New Mexico, make their pottery clay from a mix of red clay, white sand, and water, Today, pottery is mostly used for decoration, but some still use it within their ceremonial practices as well.
